Lake Titicaca experience 3 days (or 4 days, optional home stay visit)

Duration: 3 days, 2 nights (4 days, 3 nights with homestay option)

Lake Titicaca is one of the natural wonders of Peru and the largest mainland lake on the South American continent. It is just a seven hour bus ride from Cusco, possible to do overnight, making this three or four-day trip a superb extension to your itinerary if time allows. The lake lies on the border of Peru and Bolivia and you can see wonderful views of both countries from either side. It is a special place for a few key reasons: the altitude almost 4000m, making it the highest commercially navigable body of water in the world; and it is where the Incas believed civilisation began, dotted with islands where to locals still follow many indigenous traditions. At this altitude, nights are cold and days are sunny. Sunsets and sunrises are simply spectacular. The journey from Cusco to the lake-side city of Puno offers the opportunity to visit a number of important Inca ruins. From Puno the tour takes you to several floating islands and where you can meet the local communities and learn about their unique way of life, with the option to stay with them in their homes.

Salkantay Trail 4 days (5 days including Machu Picchu)

Duration: 4 days, 3 nights (5 days, 4 nights including Machu Picchu) The famous Salkantay trail gives hikers the chance to see some of the most stunning glacier lakes and snow-capped peaks in Peru. Recently nominated one of the top 25 routes in the world by National Geographic, the trek has become a popular, slightly more challenging, alternative to the classic Inka Trail. The varied trail offers the opportunity to come face-to-face with the Salkantay mountain glacier, pass by beautiful turquoise glacier lakes, camp at Inka ruins, take a zip line and relax at the hot springs of Santa Teresa. The trek is a total of four days and three nights, either choosing camping or hostal accommodation, or a combination of both, with an option to extend and visit Machu Picchu on day five.

Ausangate

Duraton: 5 days, 4 nights

At 6,380m, Nevado Ausangate is the highest mountain in the Cusco region of Peru; on a clear day you can see the snow-capped peak soaring up in the distance from Cusco city centre. Although this trek is not the most technical of similar ones in the region, given the altitude, walking and camping mostly above 4,000m, reaching 5,205m at the highest point of the trail, time and acclimatisation are paramount. Breathtaking views and scenery are on offer in abundance throughout this hike, as well as passing through and interacting with the local indigenous communities and the chance to bathe your tired muscles in natural hot springs on day four.

Level: tough, only suitable for those with previous multi-day trek experience, altitude acclimatisation required
